Areas in biotechnology

One of the possible definitions of biotechnology that we can find is given by the O.E.C.D., as “the application of science and technology to living organisms, as well as parts, products and models, to alter living or non-living materials for the production of knowledge, goods and services”. Here we are able to observe the convergence of multitude areas of knowledge, such us biology, medicine, chemistry, physics, pharmacy, informatics, mathematics…, and the potentiality of biotechnology, considered one of the next social revolutions, like the industrial, the chemical and the informatics were in the last centuries.

Due to its great complexity, and for a better way of understanding and spreading, Biotechnology has been divided into different “colours”, with independence from Scientifics-Technological aspects, and based on the sectors in which it works, although it is important to point out that many of the services and products that biotechnology supplies are based on some or even all the areas, what shows the idea of the multidisciplinary character of biotechnology. On the other hand, there are some biotechnological areas with their own colour too, but they are not very used.

The main areas are:

Biotecnología médica y de la salud humana y animal

Biotecnología en Nuevas Energías y Materiales

Biotecnología AgroalimentariaBiotecnología Marina

Bioinformática y Nanotecnologías

Bioseguridad, Bioética, Derechos y Patentes
