Welcome to Canarias Bioregion

Biotechnology is the science whose aim is to study live organisms or their parts to obtain goods and services. With a multidisciplinary character (combining disciplines like biology, medicine, pharmacy, veterinary, physics, informatics, chemistry and chemical engineering), biotechnology has important influences on pharmacy, medicine, microbiology, food science, agriculture, stockbreeding, energy sources and environment. This fact is provoking a dizzy economic, scientific and social development not only in the “first world”, but also in the emerging countries that bet for this science.

Biotechnology, as a science based on knowledge, will be the motor of the future worldwide economic development, like the information technology was in the second half of the 20th century. For this reason Europe, and the Canary Islands as part of it, is establishing the suitable resources for the development of biotechnology, by means of: increasing the R+D, favouring the creation of clusters or scientific-entrepreneur gathers in which both technology and knowledge exchange and flow naturally, generating new goods and services, creating a high qualified employment and job opportunities for the researches, providing remarkable socio-economic benefits, and therefore providing society with goods and services as the results of the public and private investment.
